Throughout childhood, memories of the long trips to our maternal grandparents' farm located in West Grove, Pa. are still clear. Our grandparents, Horace and Rose Gibbs were wonderful and kind people. Our grandparents lived in a small and well-preserved farmhouse. There was a wood burning stove and oven in the kitchen. Big Pop (our grandfather) always kept the wood cabinet filled with freshly cut wood.
Big Pop maintained the farm with some hired hands. He was one of the few African-Americans who owned and operated his farm. There were livestock, orchard trees and growing of vegetables in the fields.
Looking back at look amazing days, Big Pop was a man far ahead of his times. Big Pop was a well-respect citizen in the local community. In addition, Big Mom and he were active members of Enon Baptist church.
In addition to the farm, Big Pop was a papermaker by trade. He worked at the Lyle Paper Co. They made filtering paper that was used in pharmaceuticals. They supplied Smith, Kline and French; now known as Glaxo Smith in Phila.
There is a tremendous work ethic and pride that run deep in the Gibbs family. We were truly blessed to have wonderful grandparents. |
